Best buildings named (Mon 15 November, 2010)

The Highland Archive Centre in Inverness was a top award winner in a prestigious architectural competition this weekend.

The conference and awards ceremony on Friday evening was the culmination of a series of regional events held across the Highlands and Islands. The archive centre won the Best Building in the awards open to architects based in the region.

In the Open Award for Best Building, commendations went to Castle Stuart Golf Clubhouse and the Centre for Health Science in Inverness, with the top award going to Raasay Hall.

Calum MacLean, IAA President, said: “Raasay Hall is a very worthy winner. These awards showcase the best building design in the region and we had an outstanding field yet again this year. The winning building is one of exceptional quality and would easily hold good comparison on the international architecture scene.”

Architect Andrew Wright OBE, who chaired the judging panel, said: “The Archive Centre was an accomplished response to a complex brief. It provides a fine location for those who choose to tie the knot there. The jury was impressed with the standard of the entries this year.”

Castle Stuart Golf Clubhouse, was designed by G1 Architects in Glasgow and the Health Science Centre was designed by Bennetts Associates from Edinburgh.

Winner in the Open Award for Innovative Use of Timber was Acharacle Primary School designed by Gaia Group. The Open Awards for Best Building and Innovative Use of Timber are open to any building in the Highlands and Islands. Regional categories are restricted to entries designed by architects based in the region.

The winner of the Best Building in the regional category was The Highland Archive Centre in Inverness, designed by LDN Architects in Forres.
