Shetland Islands Council aspires to increase its population by 3000 people in the next 5 years, ‘Power of Place’ will be asking how architecture and place making can support a sustainable and thriving community in the Shetland Islands.
The Lighthouse: Scotland’s Centre for Architecture and Design is working in partnership with Shetland Arts to develop Shetland’s first celebration of architecture and place during 2010. ‘Power of Place’ aims to raise the profile of architecture, design and construction within Shetland and place this in a national, and international context. By celebrating the variety of architectural styles it will offer a chance to look at the heritage of the islands and to look forward to a Shetland that is a leader in architecture and the creative industries.

The IAA has been in a period of relatively rapid growth and development over the past two years. It has been integrally involved with the Highlands Housing Fair, a major Architectural competition resulting in a new small community of thirty-five houses which will open to the public in 2009 as a major national and international exhibition. IAA representatives have also been heavily involved in the Six Cities Festival of Design 2007; the Inverness section of the Six Cities took as its theme "Home / Environment" and involved numerous lectures, exhibitions and public events around the theme of sustainable housing and related issues.
